← Back to HomeYard Drainage & Standing Water
Persistent standing water can damage turf, create muddy areas, interfere with the use of the property and indicate larger grading or drainage problems. GSOS evaluates the affected area along with surrounding elevations, soil conditions and the direction of surface runoff.
Depending on the property, the solution may involve improving surface drainage, modifying the soil or grade, collecting water at strategic locations or creating a controlled path for water to leave the affected area.
Surface Drainage Solutions
Not every drainage problem requires an underground system. Sometimes the most effective solution is improving the way water moves across the surface of the property. GSOS evaluates the overall site before determining whether surface improvements, underground drainage — or a combination of both — provide the best solution.
Catch Basins & Drainage Inlets
Catch basins can be useful when water consistently collects in a defined low area. However, GSOS doesn't automatically install a catch basin simply because standing water exists. The underlying cause of the drainage problem and the available outlet must first be considered.
The objective is to solve the drainage problem — not simply hide it under a grate.
Underground Drainage
When site conditions require it, underground piping can move collected water away from problem areas and toward an appropriate discharge location. Pipe sizing, slope, inlet locations, outlet conditions, surrounding soil and expected water volume all need to be considered.
Downspout Drainage
Roof runoff can introduce a significant amount of water into a concentrated area around a home. Where appropriate, downspout water can be collected and directed farther away to a suitable discharge area.
Grading & Soil Improvements
Sometimes the problem isn't a lack of drainage pipe. Poor grading, settled areas and certain soil conditions can prevent surface water from moving effectively. In these situations, correcting the affected area's elevation or soil conditions may provide a better solution than installing unnecessary drainage infrastructure.
This is why GSOS approaches drainage as a site problem first and a pipe problem second.
Drainage System Repair & Improvements
Existing drainage systems don't always continue working as intended. Pipes can become damaged or obstructed, outlets can become buried or blocked, basins can settle and landscaping changes can alter how water reaches the original system. GSOS can evaluate existing drainage installations and determine whether repairs, modifications or additional improvements are appropriate.
Find the Cause. Then Fix the Problem.
Water always has a reason for collecting where it does. Before recommending a drainage solution, GSOS looks at where the water is coming from, where it is trying to go, what is preventing it from getting there and where it can safely be directed.
Drainage should be designed around the property — not the product being installed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does water keep pooling in my yard?
Standing water can result from several conditions, including low areas, poor grading, compacted or poorly draining soil, concentrated roof runoff, neighboring runoff or changes made to the surrounding landscape. Determining where the water originates and why it isn't leaving the area is the first step toward developing an effective solution.
Do I need a French drain?
Maybe — but not every wet yard needs one. “French drain” has become a common term used for many different drainage problems, but installing one without understanding the source of the water may not correct the actual issue. GSOS evaluates the site first and recommends the drainage method that fits the problem.
Will a catch basin fix standing water?
A catch basin can be effective when water naturally collects at a defined low point and there is an appropriate location to discharge it. However, installing a basin doesn't automatically solve poor grading, soil problems or other conditions contributing to the standing water.
Can you bury my downspouts?
In many situations, downspouts can be connected to underground drainage piping and directed to an appropriate discharge area. The property must first be evaluated to determine where that water can safely go and whether gravity provides sufficient drainage.
Why is my lawn always wet even when it hasn't rained recently?
Persistent wet areas can be caused by poorly draining soils, low elevations, groundwater conditions, irrigation problems, runoff from surrounding properties or other site-specific conditions. An onsite evaluation helps narrow down the source before a solution is recommended.
Can drainage be installed without destroying my lawn?
Drainage installation requires some disturbance wherever excavation is necessary, but the amount depends on the system and property. GSOS plans installations with the existing property in mind and works to limit unnecessary disturbance.
Can drainage water be sent into the street?
Not automatically. Where drainage water can legally and responsibly be discharged depends on the property, municipality, roadway, surrounding land and applicable requirements. A drainage solution needs an appropriate outlet; simply moving water from one property onto another problem area isn't a proper solution.
Should drainage be installed before landscaping?
When possible, major drainage problems should be addressed before investing heavily in new landscaping. Understanding how water moves across the property can influence grading, planting beds, walkways and other improvements.
